In ¡°A Worn Path,¡± Phoenix Jackson¡¯s journey to town starts out triumphantly,
but reverts to a tragedy by the end of the story. Despite the rough path in the
woods, Phoenix¡¯s journey is described to be triumphant. The woods are ¡°deep and
still,¡± (p.240) and the path ¡°[runs] up a hill,¡± (p.240) and it is certainly
tough for old Phoenix to negotiate her way. She often struggles through the
woods since she needs to ¡°creep and crawl, spreading her knees and stretching
her fingers¡± (p.240).
However, Phoenix feels comfortable in journey because she is in familiar
territory, and she can easily find way and can ¡°depend on her feet to know where
to take her¡± (p.244). The trip to town is no longer an expedition for Phoenix,
but instead has become a routine or a ritual. As long as she is in the woods, no
matter which danger she faces, she is in control and, ¡°scared of nothing¡±
(p.243). Even when Phoenix encounters a hunter pointing a gun at her and telling
her to go back, she is stubbornly responds that she ¡°[binds] to go to go on her
way¡± (243). Perhaps because Phoenix¡¯s interactions in the woods with others are
so rare, she is free to take the time to appreciate nature. She notices a dove,
scarecrow, rabbit, and even fallen logs. The familiarity of this environment
allows Phoenix to enjoy the journey and finish the path triumphantly.
However, once Phoenix arrives in the town, she finds herself in an alien
environment. She realizes that she cannot ¡°distrust her eyesight and depend on
her feet to know where to take her¡± (p.244) anymore, or she will get lost. When
she gets to the hospital, the destination of her trip, she finds herself so
flustered she is not able to talk to the nurse. She feels uncomfortable and out
of place in society. Phoenix temporarily ¡°[forgets] why she made her trip¡±
(p.245).
She becomes preoccupied with a ¡°document that had been stamped
with the gold seal, matching the dream that was hung up in her head,¡± (p.244)
going back to the time when she was too old to receive education. The attendant
in the doctor¡¯s office ignores and looks down at her, showing no respect for the
elderly woman. Phoenix becomes momentarily frozen in speechlessness. She barely
can ask for the medication her grandson needs. She is overlooked and
marginalized in the town. As she turns back to walk out of the doctor¡¯s
office, the image of the woman who could travel the woods with ease and harmony
has been replaced by the figure of Phoenix as useless and insignificant. She is
an outsider who cannot fit in and does not belong. Jackson¡¯s ordinary life ends
can now only be seen as a tragedy.
