요즘 시대에 교육계의 화두는 글로벌 리더양성이다.
다인종, 다국적 팀이 함께 모여 일하는 경우, 개인의 역량만큼 팀워크도 중요하다. 건축 분야는 여러 방면의 전문가들이 팀을 이루어 작업해야
하고 창의적 문제해결 능력과 원활한 커뮤니케이션 능력이 필수적이다.
세계대학생 건축경진대회인 ‘2009다이내믹 디자인 챌린지’의 심사위원으로 방한한 영국 브리스톨 대학의 웬디 대니얼 박사(사진 위)와 애덤
크루 박사(아래)를 만나 글로벌 인재의 핵심역량에 대해 들어봤다.

“이번 대회 참가자에게 주어진 과제는 튼튼한 빌딩을 저렴한 비용으로 짓게 설계하되 아름다운 디자인까지 고려하라는 것이었다. 이를 위해서는
다양한 학제 간(Interdisciplinary) 협력뿐 아니라 팀워크, 창의적 문제해결 능력, 효과적인 프레젠테이션 능력이 필수적이다”라고
애덤 크루 박사가 말문을 열었다.
탄탄한 팀워크를 발휘하려면 각자 팀원의 역할을 충실히 수행하는 것은 기본이고 서로의 아이디어를 비판하지 않는 과정을 거쳐야 한다. 특히
창의적 문제해결을 위해 각자 아이디어를 내놓는 브레인스토밍을 할 때 엉뚱한 아이디어로 보이더라도 일단 수용하는 자세가 중요하다고 한다. 예를
들어, 튼튼하면서도 저렴한 빌딩을 지으려면 브레인스토밍 과정을 거쳐서 기존의 건축 자재 대신 MDF(Medium Density
Fiberㆍ나무합판)를 활용해서 문제를 해결하자고 의논하는 식이다.
프레젠테이션의 경우, 청중의 관심을 끌고 발표자가 원하는 방향으로 설득할 수 있어야 한다. 국내 학습자들은 파워포인트와 텍스트에 의존해서
자료를 읽어 내려가는 경향이 있다고 한다. 그보다는 텍스트 없이 주제에 맞는 이미지 하나를 보여주고 발표자는 청중을 쳐다보면서 메시지를 전달해야
훨씬 효과적이다. 웬디 대니얼 박사도 프레젠테이션을 앞두고 수많은 리허설을 통해 반복 연습을 한다. 메시지의 경우 2, 3개 정도 핵심 주제를
정해서 전달할 때 청중의 관심을 끝까지 유지할 수 있다.
창의적인 글로벌 마인드를 갖추려면 어떻게 해야 할까. 애덤 크루 박사는 피카소의 말을 인용하면서 다양한 경험을 강조했다. “피카소에 따르면
나쁜 예술가는 남의 작품을 베끼지만 위대한 예술가는 남의 작품에서 훔쳐온다. 시간이 날 때마다 세계 각국을 여행하면서 다양한 문화와 정보를
접하고 자신의 것으로 적용할 수 있을지 고민해 보면 좋다”고 조언했다.
세계화 시대라고 해도 모든 나라의 문화가 비슷해질 수는 없고, 또 바람직하지도 않다. 건축의 경우에도 한국은 한국적 곡선을 살린 건축물이
가장 아름답다. 자국 문화의 장점을 살리면서 전 세계 사람들이 공감할 수 있는 작품을 내놓을 수 있도록 글로벌 문화 역량을 강화해 나가야
한다.
글로벌 리더는 세계 누구와 함께 일해도 원활한 의사소통으로 리더십을 발휘할 수 있어야 한다. 이를 위해 다양한 글로벌 문화를 잘 알고
세계인과 소통하면서도 자신만의 독특한 문화를 창의적으로 전달할 수 있어야 하겠다. 특히 기업들은 한 분야만 아는 전문가보다 여러 분야를 알고
창의적으로 연결시켜 문제를 해결하는 폭넓은 지식을 갖춘 인재를 선호하고 있다.

Global Leaders Possess Creative Problem Solving
Skills
The current global trend in education is the production
of global leaders. Team work and chemistry are important when people with
different backgrounds come together to work with each other, especially in
fields such as architecture and engineering. We have interviewed Dr.
Wendy Daniel and Dr. Adam Crewe, who are both professors at the University of
Bristol and judges at the '2009 Dynamic Design Challenge', to discuss the issue
of global leadership.
"The contest is designed to motivate students to
come up with models that are not only efficient and strong but also
aesthetically beautiful. The contest does not involve a one-man task, and
teamwork is crucial. Each team is required to present a poster promoting
their project and a presentation in English and is required to answer questions
that judges may have," Professor Crewe added.
"At the University of
Bristol, we practice the habit of respecting everyone's opinion. For
creative problem solving, engineers make sure that every idea, no matter how
silly it may sound, is presented at the round table," Professor Crewe
explained.
An effective presentation is also important in appealing to
the audience. While most students tend to read the PowerPoint text, it is
important for them to come up with new material in an impromptu manner on the
basis of the audience's reaction. In fact, the professors rehearse their
presentations numerous times to prepare for such situations. At the
University of Bristol, professors often give an impromptu exercise in which the
student is given a single picture, and they are asked to make a presentation on
such picture.
On the issue of creativity, Professor Crewe quoted
Picasso. "A bad artist copies, and a good artist steals. I think
that the best way is to travel to all parts of the world, experience the
architecture and see for oneself what works and what does not. Field study
and applied studies are so important."
Accordingly, a global leader
should be able to provide effective leadership for anyone anywhere.
For the sake of attaining such objective, a profound understanding of other
cultures and knowledge of real life situations are critical.
